"A life is like a piece of paper in which every person along the way leaves a mark". This Chinese Proverb describes MelissaÕs song writing inspiration and style. Charged by those around her, the belly and float of her voice and percussive acoustic guitar explore things small and human; large and mysterious. The Paradox Project narrates the tiny winding walks that make us who and what we are.
Spending time in music schools and performing in choirs, Melissa developed her voice early as well as her ability to pick up any sort of instrument and make it sing. Her first band KarmaÕs accomplishments included the first place standing in ROR Concerts Battle of the Bands, which led them to record at Orbiter Studios in Toronto. During that session MelissaÕs song Real Disguise was recorded and released on PIA Records compilation CD "Rising Indies".
Over the past few years, Melissa has been learning the craft of creating and releasing an independent recording, and in 2006 released her debut CD "The Paradox Project".
The recordings that became The Paradox Project began in the Summer of 2002 with a digital 8 track in MelissaÕs East Van apartment. The lyrics explore getting lost, stars, relationships, friends who are sad, money, greed, unhinged weekends, the power of advertising and living.
True to form, Melissa brought her intimate approach to singing, playing and writing into the recording process. The tracks were recorded in various living rooms and bedrooms, written with the help of a few close friends. If you listen closely, you might even hear a distant car drive by.
